WHAT STEAM TECHNOLOGY IS ON YOUR HOLIDAY WISH LIST?

There are only 7 days left to shop before Christmas! While you’re scrambling to grab those last-minute gifts for your loved ones, don’t forget to pick up one for your class (and yourself). Breathe some life back into your STEAM programming with a new piece of technology to share. Check out a few of the items on our wish list that you’re going to want to add to your own:

Osmo-   If you have access to iPads, iPhones, or Fire tablets then Osmo is the perfect thing for your kinesthetic learners that need to do more than touch a screen. Toy of the Year finalist in 2018, this small gadget attaches to the top of your device and works with the camera to turn your tabletop into an interactive workspace. As students draw, write, or manipulate the included pieces, they will see their work reflected within the chosen app. Games are available for just about every content area K-6. Even more exciting are the teacher training and printable lesson plans that will help you integrate Osmo into your classroom. Devices and games can be purchased individually, but classroom kits are also available.

Makey Makey  - Termed an Invention Kit by the creators at JoyLabz, Makey Makey enables you to essentially turn anything into a touchpad. Imagine the excitement and engagement the first time your students play the piano by touching bananas!  They will have never felt so powerful. If you are having a hard time imagining what that would look like, or how it is possible, don’t fret. The website gives beginners step-by-step directions with photographs to get started. Once you become comfortable with the gear, check out the Labz for more ideas.

Robots by Wonder Workshop– Bring coding to life by introducing a new classmate: Dot, Dash, or Cue. Students will begin interacting with these robots and corresponding apps easily through instinct. Use the Learn to Code curriculum to provide direct instruction and build on their natural curiosity. With continued exploration students will develop a deeper understanding of coding and robotics. Intrinsic motivation will lead them to see just exactly what they can do, whether it is completing a maze, traversing ramps, or sending a message to a classmate on the other side of the room.
